Odds are you’ve heard about the different learnER styles before, not to be confused with learnING styles. Here’s a quick refresher on learnER styles from the CNY ATD Train the Trainer program which just wrapped up its second day.

Students were given the challenge of reviewing the Learner Styles section of Training Design and Development and then presenting to the class one of the styles which was assigned to them.

The 5 learner styles presented were:

  • Confident
  • Affective
  • Transitional
  • Integrated
  • Risk Taking

The method by which students were directed to use was large a wall pad. They had approximately 10 minutes to prepare and were not given a specific time limit for their presentation. Students were asked to define the style, identify typical characteristics, and provide training design tips. Through this exercise the other students were expected to develop an awareness of the different learner styles and consider how they might employ different strategies and tactics to engage each style.

Here are the results each student produced (plus my own addition to cover the fifth style [Risk Taking] since there were four students present).
